THE MOST IMPOTANT STEP PRIME PRIME PRIME!
Paperhanging and Interior Painting does not except responsibly
for injury, property lost or damage for the information
below. Each project may differ. Always consult with your
retailer or the manufacturer for your particular project
and follow the products instructions carefully.
Installing wallcovering why you must
prime.
99.9% of all instructions that
come with wallcovering state to use a wallcovering primer. That
by itself should be a good enough reason to prime before
installing wallpaper. Using a quality wallcovering primer/
sealer helps to make future wallpaper removal much easier.
A wallcovering primer will do two things; seal the paint,
and promote adhesion. A wallcovering primer that promotes
adhesion will make it possible to hang wallpaper on difficult
surfaces, such as glossy paint. Flat latex paint finishes
are porous and may soften and weaken as the paste dries,
causing bubbles and seams to open. The moisture in paste
can absorb through the paint all the way into the paper
facing of sheet rock, making future removal difficult and
may result in a lot of drywall damage.

Painting after wallpaper has been removed.
Removing wallpaper is only half the battle. The
manufactures of wallpaper stripping solutions all state
in their instructions to wash off the old paste and rinse
the walls with clean water. You have to be careful
sometimes on unprimed walls, over scrubbing and washing
may cause drywall damage. If this is the case, allow the
walls to dry thoroughly, usually over night, and sand the
walls the next day. Next, if you are going to paint, spot
prime any torn gypsum with GARDZ. Repair any torn drywall,
nailpops, dents, with spackle or joint compound, and sand
walls. Prime the walls with GARDZ High Performance Sealer
or a sealing/stain killing oil-based primer. Always
check first with your paint store retailer. If after
washing the walls, there is any paste residue or the paste
has absorbed into the paint surface, not applying the correct
prime first the latex paint might crackle .

Painting over interior glossy paints.
The instructions on interior latex paints generally states
to clean the surface of any contaminants and sand glossy
surfaces dull. Sanding doors, doorframes, chair rail,
moldings, baseboards, etc. can be quite difficult with
all the intricate detail. There are a few primers that
stick to glossy paints surfaces without sanding. What
happens if you either don’t sand the surface dull
or prime with the correct primer? I have seen many times
were the paint did not bond to a glossy paint and peel

Benjamin Moore Paints has a Matt Finish paint that a lot
of my customer love it has a flat finish is resistant to
most common household stains, can be washed, and easily
touched-up. I never recommend Eggshell to my consumers.
Depending on the brand, color, and lighting, it sometimes
shows roller stoppage and does not touch up well. Paint
sheen goes from dull too shiny and is not standardized
among paint companies. Common paint sheen’s are flat,
eggshell, satin, semi-gloss, and high gloss. Check
your paint store retailer for sample chips.
